Starting all the way back to March 31, 1776. Abigail Adams was a woman who is now known as a the first second lady - the wife of the vice president - where she is most known for disagreeing with her fathers 'remember the ladies' approach in laws. Not only was Abigail Adams a supporter of women's rights averting slavery and assisted woman's education, but was a significant advisor to her husband- as previously stated- the vice president.

Elizabeth Blackwell was born in England, however pursued her education in the United States at the Geneva College in New York. On January 23rd, 1849 as the student with the highest marks from her grade, she became the first woman who graduated from medical school.

On May 29, 1851, Sojourner Truth an African-American woman civil rights activist, sold 4 times during her life as a slave before her success-full escape addressed women's rights during the delivery of her speech “Ain't I a Women?” at the Women's Rights Convention in Ohio. The purpose and wish being for all women black or white to be equal to men.

On December 10, 1869, Wyoming was the first state to grant women the right to vote as well as hold office.
New Zealand was the first self-governing nation which allowed women their right to vote in 1873.
On March 8, 1911, the first international women's day, over a million people had gathered from Germany, Austria, Denmark, and Switzerland addressing labor and women's suffrage rights.
Margaret Sanger was the first to open a birth control clinic in Brooklyn in the United States on October 16, 1916. The clinic was considered illegal by the “Comstock law” which by definition states it is illegal to send indecent claims through mail, in this case those messages revolved around birth control. As a consequence of voilent threats she was forced to close her clinic down.

On August 18, 1920, the contract of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution involved America’s national government and fundamental laws, and assured certain basic rights for the citizens. This amendment was established as “the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” (History.com Editors). This Amendment was also named after a woman in honour for her work, Susan B. Anthony.
In December 1929, there was a riot in Nigeria, led by women also known as women's war. More than 25,000 women were involved in the protest against British officials. The riot involved feminism, economic and societal issues. This riot took several months for the government to suppress them.
May 29, 1943, Naomi Parker Farley was the creator of the Rosie and Riveter poster that portrayed female defense workers in World War II, this was less common for women during that time period. Consequently the poster became a symbol for women's empowerment.

Women, like men, should try to do the impossible. And when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others.
On December 1, 1955, during the "separate but equal" discriminatory period against African-Americans in the US, labels based on race dictated the seatings on the buses. Therefore when Rosa Parks in Alabama, refused to give up her seat to a white man, it marked the beginning to upcoming boycotts supporting the civil rights movement (struggle for social justice).

The FDA (Food & Drug Administration) approved the use of birth control on May 9, 1960. “The pill” was originally ordered to Margaret Sanger who was the first to open a birth control clinic. After she re-opened her clinic once again she was then supported financially by Katherine McCormick who was a Suffragist & philanthropist.
Mirabal sisters also were known as the "Las Mariposas" (the butterflies) who protested against Rafael Trujillo (dictator of the Dominican Republic). Due to the protest, the Mirabals were murdered on November 25, 1960, however, the public further protested and participated in the anti-Trujillo movement. Within a year, the protests overthrew the dictatorship. The death of Las Mariposas raised awareness against women’s violence.

President John F. Kennedy signed the equal pay act into law, allowing women to work the same job as men without discrimination and differentiate salary because gender. This was signed on June 10, 1963.
President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil rights act into law on July 2, 1964, where discrimination based on race, gender, religion, and nationality was banned, which applied to employment as well.
Betty Friedan - feminist, activist, and an American author who wrote a novel called The Feminine Mystique in 1963. This novel portrayed the stereotypes that the women were expected to follow such as being a housewife, being married, and having children. This book explored women that were “feminine” should not work, have an education, or hold any political opinions. This book supported the creation of the National Organization for Women (formed on June 30, 1966) - largest organisation of feminist activists in the United States. This organisations promotes feminist ideals, arrange societal change, eliminate discrimination, and achieve as well as protect the equal rights of all women of any aspects of social status.

When she stopped conforming to the conventional picture of femininity she finally began to enjoy being a woman.
President Richard Nixon signed the Education revision into the law on June 23, 1972, where it averted that no one in the United States based on the gender, should be excluded from participation or be discriminated against within the education program.
On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court of the United States stated that women's right to abort should be legal.
Prior to September 20, 1973, “The Battle of the Sexes” tennis event, Riggs was known to be the best tennis player in the world, winning men's singles and doubles at Wimbledon. Early 1973 he stated that he could beat any female tennis player, to which Billie Jean King responded, accepting the challenge. Riggs was defeated by King 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. After the match, King said, “It would ruin the women’s tennis tour and affect all women’s self-esteem.”

I wanted to use sports for social change
Young women today often have very little appreciation for the real battles that took place to get women where they are today in this country. I don't know how much history young women today know about those battles.
July 12, 1984, Geraldine Ferraro was the first Italian-American woman to become the vice president nominee who was selected by Walter Mondale who was the leading Democratic presidential candidate. He selected her to be his running mate (the chosen to become the vice president).

Some leaders are born women
On August 10, 1993, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was the second women to join the supreme court where she worked at the federal bench (being able hear cases, only with the confirmation by the constitution of the U.S.) for 25 years. Throughout her career she supported gender equality, cicil rights, and women interests.

Women will only have true equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up the next generation.
ICPD Programme of Action was founded in September 1994. The program involves several issues regarding the population, development, gender equality, reproductive health and rights.
There is a special place in hell for women who don't help other women.
The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act also included violence against women which was signed by Bill Clinton on September 13, 1994. It provided financial support for programs that would help victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, rape, and other relations to violence.
The first female speaker of the House was Nancy Pelosi, she also gets the title for being able to be the first legislator - a person who creates laws and are often elected politicians by the state’s people - to hold the office twice in more than 50 years. On January 4, 2007.
